In my opinion, I believe that statistics on mental health disorders, mental illness are more of a guide. I don’t believe that any one resources has exact numbers on mental illness, its impossible. I also believe that based on where the statistics come from, the numbers can be skewed – for instance- I believe tobacco companies, pharmaceutical companies will always skew their numbers in their direction – thats my opinion.
I do feel we need some sort of references though, to get an idea of what is happening as far as mental health for ourselves and our children. I have learned from working with many clients, parents and children, that it may get worse with every generation in those that struggle.
This is what I learned
In the U.S., studies show that about 13% of children aged 8 to 13 had a diagnosable mental illness within the past year. The most common disorder in this age range is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which affects 8.5 percent of these children. Mood disorders affect about 4 percent of them, while major depressive disorder affects 2.7 percent. On top of that, about 1 in 5 adolescents aged 13 to 18 will experience a “debilitating mental disorder” (meaning it will severely impact their lives for longer than 6 months) at some point in their life. 1 in 4 adolescents will develop a diagnosable anxiety disorder, with about 6 percent of them experiencing severe anxiety disorders.
Adults, unfortunately, don’t have it much easier. About 18 percent of adults have a diagnosable mental illness like anxiety, and nearly 10% of adults have been diagnosed with a mood disorder (i.e. depression, manic bipolar disorder) in the past year. Astoundingly, 45 percent of mood disorder cases are considered “severe” by diagnosing professionals. Women are 50 percent more likely to be diagnosed with mood disorders, with 21 percent of females experiencing general mental illness (14 percent of men). About 22 percent of people ages 18-25 are affected by mental disorders, and nearly 21 percent of people ages 26 to 49. 14 percent of people over the age of 50 are diagnosed with mental disorders each year.
Note on the above: I do believe that as we move forward in life, get older, live a very routined life – this can be where much of the depression can come from. On the other hand – when we struggle with sadness, depression and don’t find the cause, it keeps getting worse – and with the amount of challenges women have on their plate, we tend to suppress, rather than address. Besides children, I love working with moms and women 40 +.
When it comes to getting treatment for these conditions, the numbers are even more staggering. Among the entire population of adults with mental illness, only about 41 percent received mental health services in the past year. Thankfully, among adults with a serious mental illness, about 63 percent received mental health services in the past year.
Just over half (50.6 percent) of children aged 8 to 15 received mental health services in the past year and about 15 percent of the general population seeks mental health treatment. However, the numbers are unclear whether that 15 percent have an official diagnosis of mental illness or not.
The most popular treatment options for mental illness include anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. While the risks of medications are well-documented, many people have some success with a variety of talk therapy.
And…if you use therapy with plant medicine, flower remedies the change will be, in my experience, fantastic!
Knowing the Signs
Did you know that half of all chronic mental illness is expected to start around age 14, with about 75 percent of symptoms showing by age 24? Despite early treatment for teens and young adults who manifest symptoms early, many people have delayed symptoms. This means early diagnosis and intervention is critical, as 8 percent of adults 18 to 25 have suicidal thoughts.
This age group is also at the highest risk for suicide attempts.
I have clients that are still in elementary school that struggle. I have learned there are so many pieces to our puzzle, our body and mind – its more than just – I have depression – there are questions, there are pieces that need to be put together so an understanding can comes to what your mind, body and soul need to help itself to heal.
We are not robots. We are individual with individual needs, and the earth has provided everything for us – including its medicine. Even though this is not what we were taught, doesn’t it make sense? The successes that come from plant medicine, flower remedies, have been amazing. As a Practitioner for Mental Health – I am not allowed to diagnose, I do listen to symptoms and my clients like to share a diagnosis with me.
I look for generational patterning (what we inherit), symptoms now, exact struggles, any trauma, surgery, how birth was and make a bend of different plant extracts based on this and other information. What does your family life look like.
The goal is that the body and mind work together to self heal. I listen to what you want to feel, what you want to accomplish – these are not dreams, this is the reason you feel in a negative place – because you are not following the path you are meant to live, and it can change from our 20’s to our 50’s. You have to be your best self, be in balance, grounded, peaceful, happy, bonded. When your world is chaotic, you are not grounded, out of balance- and whether you blame it on a behaviorally challenged child or a bad relationship – it can be changed.
Everyone has problems, its how they encompass you, how you allow it to encompass you. Plant medicine was put on this earth to help us to retain balance and peace – mentally and emotionally. It is strong earth medication. It is powerful. I get clients that have no where else to turn that may hear voices, that struggle with intense anxiousness, severe sadness, children on the spectrum, behavioral issues.
Give the remedies 2 months and see what begins to happen to you, your thoughts, your behaviors, your happiness! I am so happy being a last resort, because the ultimate goal, is to be the last resort, to bring you back to yourself, then show you how to do it yourself. How to reach for the remedy your body and mind is asking for when faced with a hump in life.
The results have been amazing for me, amazing for my family and if you are ready to go beyond what you know, what you have been taught in the past and try something not well known in the U.S., you can make amazing changes in your life, for yourself, for your family, for your future!
