According to the ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America), anxiety is the most common mental disorder, affecting approximately 40 million adults in the US ages 18 and older, and approximately 1 in every 8 children 17 and younger. There is evidence to show that those who have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression as well.
The two disorders, although mutually exclusive, have very similar symptoms and patterns.
Statistics show, most of the anxiety disorders, including GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), panic disorder, phobias, and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), affect woman more often than men.
These four types of anxiety disorders affect about 18% of the adult population in America, which equates to about 39.5 million people. And most of them show signs in early childhood.
According to, “The Economic Burden of Anxiety Disorders”, an ADAA sponsored study, they found that anxiety disorders in the United States cost a total of more than $42 billion per year, and about half of that is associated with health care services for people treating physical symptoms from their anxiety.
Anxiety disorders can develop from any combination of numerous risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life or traumatic events.
Working with clients who struggle, and I include myself in this, anxiety is debilitating. It affects our minds, our bodies, how we live life.
It takes control and claims first rights on anything we do, from being able to leave the house to go shopping to be able to vacation with family. If our anxiety tells us we cannot go, we cannot go and if our depression tells us we cannot get out of bed that day, we cannot get out of bed. Its so hard to explain to others why this is, it is just the way it is. We lose all control over our life and our emotional challenge takes over
